The UK government has now committed at least 750 personnel, and considerable logistical and financial support to help tackle the Ebola outbreaks in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. In addition, the US government has deployed over 2000 personnel to Liberia, while the Chinese, French, and German governments, among others, have pledged their own military support.
In recent decades, the military has come to play a prominent role during humanitarian crises. This remains a contentious issue, and has been subject to considerable critique, particularly in conflict and post-conflict settings.
This event will explore the role of the military during the ongoing Ebola outbreak, the interaction between the military and humanitarian agencies in crisis contexts, and the impact of the securitisation agenda on global health and humanitarian programmes worldwide.
