Where have all the men gone? Health, gender and social justice

Upcoming Symposium

17th June 5pm – 630pm
UCL Institute of Child Health 30 Guilford Street, WC1N 1EH

Globally, men experience a higher burden of disease and lower life expectancy than women, but policies focusing on the health needs of men are notably absent from the strategies of global health organisations. The ‘Global Burden of Disease: 2010’ study shows that all of the top ten causes of premature death and disability, and top ten behavioural risk factors driving rates of ill-health around the world, affect men more than they affect women. A review of institutional strategies, however, finds that efforts and resources are more often focused on the health needs of women. This may miss an opportunity to promote truly gender transformative policies and programmes that include men and boys, and result in better health outcomes for everyone.

This talk will analyse evidence that gender norms drive some of these differences in health outcomes, and will suggest how we might move forward to develop a truly gender-equitable global health approach.

Speaker

Dr Sarah Hawkes – UCL Institute for Global Health

Panel
Dr Julian Walker – UCL Bartlett Development Planning Unit
Dr Jenny Parkes – Institute of Education

Chair
Mike Rowson – UCL Institute for Global Health

About the book:
Several factors are coming together that put pressure on NGOs working in development: the economic crisis, the growing conditionality of aid, and increased competition for funding between NGOs seeking to grow in reach and influence. This creates ‘a perfect storm ’that focuses attention increasingly on a new language of aid, policies and procedures. The book addresses the current crisis and growing disconnect between development frameworks and the lives of women. It argues for NGOs to learn more from their past experiences and to keep open a challenging and creative space for analysing aid.

Volunteer Positions Available at The Welbodi Partnership

Welbodi Logo

The Welbodi Partnership is a UK registered charity that works to improve child health in Sierra Leone. We have created a model that brings together hospitals, The Government of Sierra Leone, community groups and experts from around the world to create sustainable improvements in the provision of Paediatric care.
In the UK we are small but growing and are looking for volunteers to join our team. Working with our Development and Fundraising Manager, volunteers will assist with a wide range of tasks that include research, fundraising, marketing and administration. We would like to work with students that are passionate about healthcare in developing countries and we are able to work around school schedules. If you have anything from one to three days per week to offer we would love to hear from you. Your help would allow us to grow as an organisation and continue our work in a country with some of the worst child health statistics in the world.
Please send a covering letter to sebastian@welbodipartnership.org detailing your availability and areas of interest.
We look forward to hearing from you.
The Welbodi Partnership.

Postgraduate Training in Global Health – Trainee and Student Questionnaire

The 2013 Postgraduate Training in Global Health – Trainee and Student Survey is now open.  It is the second large scale survey we have carried out, looking at trainees’ and students’ experiences and views on PostgraduateTraining in Global Health. It aims to understand what you, as a trainee/student, want and need in terms of Global Health training. What do you feel is useful and what would help you develop an interest in Global Health.

The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete, with opportunities to give open text responses detailing what you think.

It is anonymous and confidential; you can not be identified from your response. Your views and experiences are really important if training in this area is to be improved. We will share these results with postgraduate training Institutions and aim to publish the results at the end of the year in a peer reviewed journal.

To thank you for your time, survey participants are invited to enter our free prize draw to win a case of 6 bottles of fair trade wine or fair trade hamper. Winners will be chosen at random and notified by the Alma Mata Working Group.

If you have any queries or require further information about the survey, please contact us at secretary@almamata.org.uk.
