New Frontiers in Digital Influenza Surveillance: Web data and mobile-phone connected diagnostic tests

Date: Thursday 26 June 2014

Location: Institute of Materials, central London

Early-warning sensor systems that can test and track serious infectious diseases – such as major flu epidemics– using mobile phones and the internet are increasingly becoming a focus for researchers across the globe. Other approaches aim to track reported symptoms of infection by searching millions of internet sources including media reports, search engine queries (e.g. Google Trends and Bing) and social networking sites (e.g. Facebook and Twitter) to identify outbreaks even before people attend clinics or from parts of the world that lack the resources for traditional public health surveillance.

It is these techniques, and more, that will be the focal point of this event. Speakers from academia and Industry will come together to discuss issues surrounding influenza research, including the clinical needs, web data, and mobile phone-connected diagnostics. Speakers include representatives from Telefonica, OJ Bio, Harvard Medical School, California NanoSystems Institute, Columbia University, University College London, LHSTM, Public Health England and Imperial College London
