From Thomas Crapper to Bill Gates: Poo, flies and reinventing the toilet
Date: Tuesday 20th May 2014 19:00
Location: The Marlborough Arms, 36 Torrington Place, WC1E 7LY, UK
Going beyond Thomas Crapper’s water closet (W.C) improvements, a billion people worldwide currently have to defecate in the open. Bill and Melinda Gates intend to launch a new sanitation revolution, and have challenged researchers to reinvent the toilet. This event will present a new fly-based toilet, discuss why some latrines are full within a year, while others never seem to fill, and test your toilet knowledge!
Ian Banks is a medical entomologist, and Jeroen Ensink is an environmental engineer at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
