Alma Mata Call for Evidence for Barriers to Responding to the Ebola Outbreak

EbolaIn our recent seminar: “Contagion of fear: Ebola and future global health security responses” we were challenged to respond to the barriers that trainees have faced around being released to respond to the Ebola Outbreak.

To do this we need to collect evidence as to the depth and breadth of the problem.

If you have experienced barriers and would like us to advocate for you and other trainees that have faced similar difficulties please contact us at vp@almamata.org.uk

Social Determinants of Health: the view of Junior Doctors

WHOThe World Health Organisation (WHO) is currently surveying junior doctors worldwide to ask their opinions on the importance of Social Determinants of Health within their medical training and practice. As part of this, they have created the following survey, which takes up to 10 minutes to complete. If you trained in medicine it would be great if you could take some time to fill it in, to better help the WHO to understand the current status of this important area.

The Lancet: Proposed global child health competencies for UK paediatricians

Training needs to equip paediatricians working in high-income countries to be able to:

  • Deliver effective health care to children and families from diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds
  • Effectively manage diseases that are prevalent in the major diaspora communities
  • Understand the specific needs of children affected by conflict or trafficking, and child refugees, asylum seekers, and recent migrants
  • Be aware of alternative approaches to disease prevention and health-care delivery, particularly approaches that maximise the effectiveness of scarce resources
  • Have sufficient awareness of how global health issues and inequalities affect child health to be effective advocates for the improved physical and mental health of the world’s children

See article for more details.
