Global Health Portfolio

What?

A tool kit to support doctors working in international health to document the knowledge, attitudes and skills they develop whilst working in low and middle-income countries (LMIC).

For whom?

All doctors who are interested in working in international health.

Aim:

To encourage increased documentation of the skills developed whilst working in LMICs and therefore promote recognition of the value of international experience in the training of doctors.

Objectives:

To facilitate and encourage doctors to document their experience and skills gained whilst working in LMICs.
To support doctors to demonstrate their continued professional development whilst out of programme and to frame their experience in a way that is recognised by recruitment bodies.

Introduction:

  • Gaining experience working in LMICs is increasingly being recognised as beneficial to training with a positive knock-on effect on the NHS.
  • Moving forwards from it being an acceptable part of training to a central part of education /development of quality and dynamic doctors.
  • Increasing awareness of global health within the undergraduate curriculum and the opportunity to channel this focus through to postgraduate education.

What to do if you would like to take part in the Global Health Portfolio Pilot:

Before we send you a copy we just need to ask you a few quick questions. Your answers are important for us to understand the diverse needs of everyone who wishes to use the portfolio, so that we can make any necessary amendments in order to ensure that it is as useful as possible. Please find the survey here.

Once you have completed the survey the global health portfolio will be sent your way! We hope you find the portfolio useful and thank you for your time.

With kind regards,

Dr Jayne Ellis, Education and Training Coordinator, Alma Mata Working Group

“Genetics, Genomics and Global Health – Inequalities, Identities and Insecurities” – One day Conference at University of Sussex, 18th July 2014

Scientific advagenetics, genomics, global healthnces in our understanding of genetics and genomics may generate major improvements for human health in the coming decades. From a global health perspective, however, the translation of genomics into new medical treatments also raises profound international and local issues around inequality, identity and insecurity.

This interdisciplinary conference brings together experts from the fields of policy, research, industry, foundations, journalism, and non-governmental organisations in order to assess how the rise of genetic and genomic challenges has begun to shape to the field of global health, and what new challenges it poses for global health policy. There is also the opportunity to tailor the conference to your own interests by choosing from a range of concurrent panel sessions in the afternoon followed by further discussion during the networking reception.

See the University of Sussex website for more details, or register with Eventbrite.

Bloomsbury Humanitarian Debate: Resilience in the humanitarian sector

bloomsbury_humanitarian_debAs more and more NGOs, multi-mandate aid agencies and local actors focus their attention on building resilience within vulnerable communities, we ask what this concept really means for the humanitarian sector, and specifically how this concept is of use (or not) in responding to humanitarian crises.

Is building resilient communities and systems the inevitable future of aid work, and does it provide the best way to ensure long term support to some of the world’s most vulnerable people? Or is this new concept being deployed as a way to cut spending and combine development and humanitarian agendas under the umbrella of a stabilisation agenda?

Is resilience building the most relevant approach for humanitarian response in conflicts and conflict related crises such as famines or the displacement of populations? Or is this concept a hollow buzz word whose further implications are irrelevant or unrealistic for the future of humanitarian action?

Come and join the debate and let your opinion help shape the future of the sector!

Sandrine Tiller, Humanitarian Advisor, MSF
Paul Harvey, Partner, Humanitarian Outcomes
Professor Mark Duffield, Bristol University
Professor Virginia Murray, Cambridge University
