“Apps, maps and cyber chats: how technology can be harnessed for global health”

The result of a partnership by six All Party Parliamentary Groups, this report takes a global perspective on how to empower patients to play a more active role in their care.

Drawing on case studies from low, middle and high income countries, it outlines how much the UK has to learn from overseas – and how these lessons should be applied. The report also highlights the UK’s strengths, its important role historically in supporting the global patient empowerment agenda, and how it can continue to play a leading role internationally.

“Thatcher’s legacy on health inequality in Britain and the future for public health in England”

The return of the postponed event. Dr Alex Scott Samuel will talk about his recent paper on Thatcher’s legacy on health inequality in Britain and the future for public health in England.

This promises to be a very engaging talk from a well informed, passionate speaker. He has been a lifelong campaigner for health equality and social causes from grassroots activism to national think tanks both as a physician, as a public health academic and contributor to the guardian.

Focusing on safe births and the state of midwives around the world

This seminar will highlight the challenges of caring for pregnant women in resource limited settings and will discuss the necessity of looking more holistically at the links between education, early marriage and maternal health.

Dr Juliet Bedford is the Founder and Director of Anthrologica, a research-based organisation that specialises in applied anthropology in global health. Anthrologica conducts formative and operational research across health sectors, focusing on the interface between the provision and uptake of health services, particularly in resource-scarce settings.

Juliet Holds a Doctorate in Anthropology from the University of Oxford where she is a research associate at the School of Anthropology. She works extensively in developing contexts and fragile states across Africa and Asia including Somalia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mongolia, Laos, and Vietnam. Her research interests include maternal, newborn and child health and disability. She has worked for many organisations including UNICEF, THET, LSHTM, Save the Children and many local organisations.

Juliet has specific expertise in incorporating the needs and perceptions of intended beneficiaries into health policy and programming to ensure that it is contextually relevant and that opportunities for improving health are maximised through the active participation of recipients.

Discussion topic: THE FEAST TRIAL & RESEARCH IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

They will be discussing the legendary FEAST trial which found that fluid resuscitation as an emergency treatment for African children suffering with shock from severe infections does not save lives.
