Email/online discussion forum for health and development professionals

Free webinar on Monday 15th July at 1600 to 1730 CEST (Central European Summer Time) (16:00h CEST is equivalent to 15:00h in London/British Summer Time, and 10:00h New York/EST).

This is a special meeting to share how to use email/online discussion software to facilitate communications for health. It is open to anyone with an interest, for example:
– Health professionals, librarians, publishers, researchers, policymakers
– Communication specialists, international development professionals, facilitators, moderators
– Anyone who wants to learn more on how to participate in and/or establish and/or maintain a Community of Practice.
– Speakers: Angela Nash (Knowledge Gateway/K4Health) and Neil Pakenham-Walsh (Dgroups/HIFA2015/CHILD2015/HIFA-Zambia).
– Learn how you can participate in and create your own email/online discussion forums for health and development, and how you can make them thrive.
– Facilitated Q&A to allow all participants to compare notes and foster peer learning

You will learn from two experienced moderators – Angela Nash (Knowledge Gateway) and myself, Neil Pakenham-Walsh (Dgroups/HIFA2015/CHILD2015/HIFA-Zambia). We shall describe how we use the Knowledge Gateway and Dgroups and discuss with you how you can create your own virtual Communities of Practice, and how you can make them thrive.

This is the 3rd event in the Dgroups Online Peer Exchange series.

1. Angela Nash Mercado will present how the Knowledge Gateway (which uses the same underlying software as Dgroups) connects people working in health and development through discussion forums.

2. Neil Pakenham Walsh will give us some insights on how Dgroups is used by HIFA2015 (Healthcare Information For All by 2015) and CHILD2015 to promote the availability and use of essential healthcare information in low- and middle-income countries.
Neil Pakenham-Walsh is the coordinator of the HIFA2015 campaign and co-director of the Global Healthcare Information Network. He is also currently chair of the Dgroups Foundation, a partnership of 18 international development organisations promoting dialogue for international health and development. He started his career as a hospital doctor in the UK, and has clinical experience as an isolated health worker in rural Ecuador and Peru.  For the last 20 years he has been committed to the global challenge of improving the availability and use of relevant, reliable healthcare information for health workers and citizens in low- and middle-income countries. He is particularly interested in the potential of inclusive, interdisciplinary communication platforms to help address global health and international development challenges. He has worked with the World Health Organization, the Wellcome Trust, Medicine Digest and INASP (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications). He is based near Oxford, UK. www.hifa2015.org  neil.pakenham-walsh AT ghi-net.org

This is an open session for all with an interest in virtual communities and networks for heath and development, to discuss how to support communications, knowledge sharing and learning.

A facilitated Q&A will follow after each presentation, to allow participants to compare notes and foster peer learning.

Physician Wanted for New Clinic in Kathmandu

Exciting opportunity for a Physician to join a brand new affordable clinic opening in Kathmandu on August 15th on a 6-12 month contract. The clinic would predominantly handle general medicine for tourists although given the high volume or trekking and climbing trips originating from Kathmandu you can also expect a lot of exposure to trekking injuries (high altitude oedema’s, frost bite). The clinic is also looking to offer medical support to the local community on a non-profit basis, which you would manage.

Food and lodging would be provided and the remuneration would be negotiated.

If you would like to find out more please contact Holly on holly.wright09@googlemail.com

Exciting new post for Emergency Medicine doctors who are keen to develop an interest in International Emergency Medicine and/or Toxicology.

This post is designed to provide exposure, experience and opportunities for training in international emergency medicine and/or toxicology with the option of funding a post-graduate course. This job is suitable for middle grade doctors and trainees who are motivated to broaden their experience of and contribution to the specialty.  9 months in total will be spent working at registrar level in the ED, with a focus on one of two main streams: International Emergency Medicine or Toxicology.  3 months will then be spent gaining relevant exposure, experience and opportunities towards training in international emergency medicine and/or toxicology. This includes two funded teaching trips to a middle income country (currently India) where formal Emergency Medicine is still developing as a speciality. In addition, up to £3000 is available to allow the successful candidate to fund a relevant postgraduate qualification.

This is an out of programme post; for further information on seeking prospective GMC approval for training, please refer to the details on the GMC website( http://www.gmc-uk.org/education/seeking_approval.asp )and your local training standards committee.

March for Mothers – Saturday 29th June

March for Mothers will take place on Saturday 29th June – take part, and contribute to improving maternal health for women in the world’s poorest communities.

Health Poverty Action has teamed up with Medact for this 5km family walk around Greenwich Park. By registering for the event and joining us for a fun morning out, you can help ensure women across the world and in the world’s poorest communities receive the healthcare they need to give birth safely to a healthy baby.

Why March for Mothers? 800 women die every day from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, often because women find themselves a long way from the nearest health centre. For example in northern Sierra Leone a third of women have to walk over 5km (which is why we ask you to join us in walking this distance).

Location: Greenwich Park, SE10 8QY

Time:  Saturday 29 June, 10a.m.

Route: The route is suitable for all ages and is ideal for pushchairs. View the route map here.

Cost to take part? £15 Adults, £5 Children

All participants receive a goodie bag as a thank you for joining Health Poverty Action and Medact.

REGISTER TODAY

Postgraduate Training Survey – we need your help!

The 2013 Postgraduate Training in Global Health – Trainee and Student Survey is now open, and we are calling on you to fill it out!

One of Alma Mata’s main roles is to represent medical professionals with an interest in global health, and to push for increased and better opportunities in training and education, both nationally and locally.  To do so, we need to understand what you, as a trainee/student, want and need in terms of global health training. What do you feel is useful and what would help you develop an interest in global health?

The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete, with opportunities to give open text responses detailing what you think.  The survey is anonymous and confidential – you can not be identified from your response. Your views and experiences are really important if training in this area is to be improved.  We will share our findings with postgraduate training Institutions and other interested parties, and we aim to publish them in a peer reviewed journal.  Your responses will also be used to tailor the ways in which we interact with and the requests we make of the bodies responsible for providing under- and postgraduate education in global health.

To thank you for your time, survey participants are invited to enter our free prize draw to win a case of 6 bottles of fair trade wine or fair trade hamper. Winners will be chosen at random and notified by the Alma Mata Working Group.

If you have any queries or require further information about the survey, please contact us at secretary@almamata.org.uk.

Alternatively you can paste https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FLWZWVD into your browser.

With thanks,

Alma Mata Working Group
